8 Sustainable and Heartfelt Gift Ideas for Valentine’s!

by Michelle Konov

Stumped on what to get your special one this Valentine’s Day? Tired of the usual predictable flowers, chocolate, and teddy bears? Want to spice up your gifting to surprise your partner? Thought of taking your gifts to the next level by making them sustainable?

We’re here with some ideas for you, to make it easy, fun, and something new – and to bring a smile to your other’s face! + They’re sustainable~

#1 Cook up something special

cooking, chopping vegetables, making food

They say the fastest way to someone’s heart is through their stomach – and this is especially true of showing love and affection!

Even if you’re not the best cook, there’s gotta be one dish that you’re proud of yourself for being able to make. It’s time to dust off the oven mitts, pull out the apron and make it for your special one this Valentine’s Day. They’ll not only appreciate the effort, but will definitely enjoy what you make (as long as you keep a good eye on it!).

Best part? It’s cheap, shows you care, and a good way to save on buying something someone won’t use after 2 weeks (like a teddy bear, sorry guys!).

If you’re really shaking your head: I can’t I can’t I can’t I’m an awful cook… then this is an easy alternative for a fun date night! Get a cute cutting board – preferably one that’s sustainably sourced – and load it up with cheeses, meats, fruits, and some nuts!

Pair it with a wine or other drink that you know your significant other might like and it’s a great way to show that you care.

#2 A classic charcuterie board

#3 Plant it up~

plant, succulent, gift

Ditch the usual flowers you’d pick up at a flower shop – they’re overpriced and die super quick! Pick up an actual plant that’s really easy to take care of.

Personally I have a snake plant that’s lived through me forgetting to water it for two months, so I totally recommend it! (It also doesn’t need a lot of light!) Snake plants represent nature, environment, and positive energy.

If you want something equally easy to take care of but a little more visually pretty, pothos plants are your bet. Its leaves are also heart-shaped, which is a perfect way to show your feelings!

If you’re really set on giving a gift, and you already know what you want it to be, but you’re looking for a way to spice up the look, don’t bother getting any wrapping paper or additional bags: pick up a wrap from Mr. Bluefish – like this red floral one, which is our favorite as a gift for a loved one.

It’s sustainable, too, so they can use it after as a bag!

#5 Vegan chocolate

vegan chocolate, chocolate, gift, valentine's day

Chocolate is still a great gift if you’re looking to give it! Sustainably-sourced vegan chocolate is the way to step up your chocolate game! Not only is it extra delicious, it looks like you’ve put in even more effort to your usual date.

Going the extra mile for your loved on and the earth is *chef’s kiss*

Everyone loves a thought out, hand-written card. Swap our your store-bought card for a recyclable, fair-trade card instead.

Or take it to the next level and make your own! They’re a lot easier to make than you might be thinking. You just need a pen, some thick paper, and colored pencils, markers, or even crayons if you like. I like to find a nice image on my computer and trace it over just like that, since I’m not great at drawing. If you can make it on your own, power to ya!

Also, video cards are a great way to show you care, and they can be done from any phone!

#6 It’s all in the card

card, gift card, handmade, valentine's day

#7 Experience it!

cooking class, fun, experience, gift

We’re all used to giving and receiving physical gifts: cards, chocolate, flowers, teddy bears… what have you. Maybe it’s time to up that game and gift an experience!

Some good sustainable experiences for those who like to workout or be active are things like nature hikes or a bike ride tour. For those of us who are a little more slow-paced, a ceramics-making class or a cooking class might be a nice idea.

When you experience something new with someone, you tend to remember that for a lot longer than the teddy in the corner of the room that sometimes falls behind your bed!

It’s not too late to make a scrapbook – and it can even be a virtual one. I know that I like to look back at the past year and remember what I’ve been through, and if you can show just how much you’ve thought about your loved one over the last year, then it’s the thing to do!

It might seem a little lame to some, but a heartfelt book of photos and quotes that might remind you of someone is an easy way to show how you feel!

#8 If all else fails…

scrapbook, gift, valentine's day

Gifting from the heart is so difficult and often we get stumped on what to get someone. A little help never hurt anyone!
